Joanne grew up in St. John's, Newfoundland, and received her B.Sc. from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1994. In 1997, she graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a degree in law. After initially practicing in Newfoundland, she relocated to Nova Scotia in 2000 and subsequently became a member of the Nova Scotia Bar. Joanne joined Coady Filliter in 2008, after having worked for seven years in the corporate services department of a regional law firm.

Joanne is a member of the Barristers' Society of Nova Scotia, the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and of the Canadian Bar Association.

In her leisure time, Joanne is a member of Girl Guides of Canada and enjoys being a leader of a Sparks group.
